Between 1997 and 2009 the Honda NSX-GT competed in a total of 106 races in the All Nippon GT Championship and the Super GT series, with a record of 50 pole positions and 37 wins.
Though everyone is familiar with the Honda NSX, its successor in the Super GT GT500 class was a car that no one has ever seen before: the HSV-010 with no equivalent base model available in commerce. There were initial rumors that this might have been served as a preliminary research model for the development of the next generation NSX, but no official announcements have been made.
The HSV-010 GT was powered by the HR10EG 3.4 liter V8 engine, an improved version of the HR10E used in Formula Nippon and its rear wheel drive. Constructed to meet the GT500 regulations for 2009, it received the JAF-GT500 basic vehicle certification registration approval and started racing in 2010.
The weider HSV-010 GT is the car of the Dome, from one of Honda's works teams. With drivers Takashi Kogure and Loic Duval, it immediately achieved the pole position in the first race and went on to win its second race. It showed great strength as a superb cornering machine, and continued to gain points throughout the season. It ultimately took both the team and driver titles in 2010.
They continued to race with the same team setup in 2011. As for the car, radiators were implemented on the vehicle to optimize the weight distribution, further improving its already incredible cornering performance. Though it won round 3 and 5, it fell a step short of the Nissan GT-R's which had gained both speed and reliability, and they ended 3rd in the series. However this was still the best result by all Honda teams in this season.
Unlike typical Super GT cars, the vehicle is not based on any production vehicle that is made available to purchase by the general public. Although no road versions were built, the HSV-010 GT was superseded by the hybrid-electric Honda NSX CONCEPT-GT, as 2013 Super GT season being the final year for the vehicle.
